I'm sure a lot of you share mine, which would be hitting and killing or permanently injuring a child. It's just the worst situation I can imagine. I'm actually not sure which is worse. Death would be the hardest blow at first, but a major brain injury that just takes away the kid's future entirely and creates an unfair burden for the family... that lasts forever. I just hope I never ever ever have to know what either situation really feels like.

Getting into an accident and permanently hurting myself. That makes me sound selfish, I'm also scared that I'll injure someone else. Injuring a child or a parent in front of their child is probably my biggest fear. On a less serious note I would hate to lose my license because of an accident.

Ditto. A child running into the street without any caution (ex: you see the child on a driveway then suddenly he/she is on the street at that split second) no matter what speed you're in.
One fear is putting the lives of my passengers at risk. Putting them in a situation where your car is uncontrollable within any situation thus resulting in death or permanent injury is something I can't let go. I'd rather sacrifice my own life than put those who ride with me in danger.
There was one moment in my life where I made a left turn and on the intersection, a driver was not paying attention to their oncoming red light so he sped right through it. I sped left and quick right missing the point of impact and hitting my 15 year old cousin. SHIT WAS CRAZY.

Well yeah short of killing a pedestrian or another driver due to my negligence...
Having my brake fluid evaporate to nothing right as I'm flying towards a blind downhill decreasing radius with my car buddies infront of me and a 150ft jagged gorge on the other side and just enough time to think... O000ooohhh .
Speculation, ofcourse.

My dad hit a kid 40 some years ago in an apartment complex. Parent was installing the car seat and the kid just darted right out into the middle of the parking lot. Luckily my dad was going very slow and managed to get on the brakes immediately. The kid was fine, but it still affects him to this day. He doesn't remember even what type of car he was driving, but he can walk through the instants leading up to the impact like it was yesterday.

-Brake failure at high speeds
-A little kid running out in front of my car suddenly
-Having an accident serious enough that causes some serious injuries (loss of limbs, heavy lacerations and blood loss) or death to everyone involved.

It is one of my biggest fears driving through any parking lot or residential area...
And I know it sounds awful, but I'd rather kill the child than cause them major injuries that leave them on life support for the rest of their lives.... if you kill them the pain is over with; traumatically injuring them ruins them forever...

This reinforces the importance of what I do every day like my own words cannot describe, glad to hear everyone feels this way and appreciates the gravity of what we're working so hard to avoid.
In case it wasn't obvious, I work on automotive pedestrian protection systems.

Well, in particular order:
-Hit a kid
-hit a kid
-hit a kid
-hit some kid's parents
-brake failure
-tire blowout at speeds higher than 60
But the scariest situation i've ever been into was a head-on scooter crash with a drunken man that going the wrong way while listening to my iPod. Since then i never listening to iPod using headset again wile driving. Ever.

Injuring any of my passengers. Passengers have a reasonable expectation of safely arriving at their destination. As a driver there is no worse failure than not being able to provide that and putting them in harms way.
Of course hitting kid is number one though.

- Hitting someone that suddenly jumps on the road.
- Killing myself or any passenger in an accident
- Reckless drivers

Hitting and maiming/killing a pedestrian is definitely high on that list. I've experienced a tire blowout in my mom's old Windstar doing 80mph+ and just let the car coast- so that was hairy but OK. I'm afraid of getting crushed by an 18wheeler...

Biggest fear is brake failure, getting rear-ended by an SUV, going through an intersection and getting T'd up, and #1 is being next to a semi when they have a tire blowout

I'd have to say killing your best friend. Happened to a friend of mine in HS. He lost control, and knocked down a telephone pole, and cut his car in half killing our mutual friend (his best friend). He was in a coma for a long time but eventually got out of the hospital. Once he found out about Dave he instantly became another person. You could see the guilt in his face, and he could barely function day to day. It was probably 2 years before I saw him smile again. You could tell it was haunting him, and I imagine it is to this day.

Injuring either mine, or someone else's child
